BLINK BLINK BLINK

Big Point Sable Lighthouse:

We worked Field Day 1997 from the Big Point Sable Lighthouse. The light turned 130 years old that year.

LighthouseLocated on the east shore of Lake Michigan, north of the Ciiy of Ludington, in Mason County, Michigan, she has stood the ravages of time, weather and humans.

Preservation efforts have been going on for a number of years. At one time she was about to be swallowed by the lake. Earthmoving equipment and their operators came to the rescue, just in time.

The Big Point Sable Keeper's Association is currently responsible for the preservation of the lighthouse and the keeper's house. For information about the organization's activities and membership, contact then at:

Our Operation:

We set up the station in the old lighthouse keeper's office in the entrance to the lighthouse's tower. The 14AVQ vertical antenna was mounted one hundred feet up, on the tower. GLARR treasurer/Tower Squirrel, Doug Tippet was assisted in the air erecting the antenna by Ed Halin from the Big Point Sable Keeper's Association. The view of the scenic Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area from the top of the lighthouse tower is spectacular.

The Keeper's Association was very gracious in their treatment of GLARR mrembers. They provided us with operating space, two rooms for sleeping in the keeper's quarters and even rolls for breakfast. Now THAT's a bed and breakfast.
