GB7DIP begun life in May of 1998, but had been in the planning stages for many months before that. The SysOp (System Operator) of GB7DIP is Rob Ballard M1ATV and the remote SysOp is Jon G4TSN... GB7DIP is part of a localised AMPRNET, Amateur Packet Radio Group Network, known as The Derbyshire IP Group which connects to packet radio systems in and around the Derby and Nottinghamshire area.
In its most basic form GB7DIP allows other licensed radio amateurs to "login" to the BBS and send and receive messages to and from other radio amateurs around the world. But GB7DIP is capable of much more than this! Below is a brief summary of some of the services offered by the BBS.
Router/Node. Probably the main task that GB7DIP performs, is that of routing or gatewaying TCP/IP traffic to other systems around the around the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire/Yorkshire area.
SMTP gateway. GB7DIP handles hundreds of incoming and outgoing SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) messages each week. This is a different type of mail to that used on the usual AX25 (NTS) BBS's. SMTP is the message transfer system used on the Internet and packet radio TCP/IP. GB7DIP also acts as a gateway between SMTP and NTS type mail.
NNTP server. Network News Transfer Protocol. This system is used to transfer USENET type news across the packet network.
AX25, Netrom gateway. GB7DIP operates on several frequencies and it is possible to connect on one frequency and call out on another. GB7DIP also acts as a Netrom node too, AMBER is the node alias.
Telnet gateway. It is possible to connect to GB7DIP over Internet and Radio and use the TCP/IP protocols from the BBS prompt to establish telnet connects to other TCP/IP systems .
Convers server. Access to the World wide convers network is simple from the GB7DIP prompt. This allows you to chat with amateurs from all around the World in a round table type conference system.
FTP. File Transfer Protocol. This allows other TCP/IP systems to transfer files to and from GB7DIP. There is a large archive of files available for FTP.
POP3. Post Office Protocol. GB7DIP also acts as a POP3 server for suitably equipped packet stations. POP3 allows users to retrieve personal mail automatically when they switch their packet system on.
HTTP (World Wide Web). GB7DIP also hosts a World Wide Web server, allowing users with the necessary software to browse on-line information in a graphical form. over the packet Radio Network
Miscellaneous. There are several miscellaneous services available at GB7DIP such as Accurate time services , allowing your PC clock to be synchronised to that at GB7DIP which is accurate to within +-1 second usually. ,DNS Services for Hostname Lookup
