AK4YG -- Amateur Radio

Welcome to my amateur radio page!

My name's Ben. I was first licensed as KC0BIB in the mid-'90s when I was in elementary school, first with my Tech Plus, and then with my General in middle school.

My path led to studying electrical and computer engineering and computer science at Duke University, then doing low-level software development for the telecom industry for a few years. My wife and I are currently finishing up our master's degrees at Virginia Tech. A couple of the guys in my lab who are members of the Virginia Tech Amateur Radio Association talked me into getting my license back, which I did last year. I got my CW back too -- it's probably my favorite mode to use.

My interests mainly revolve around building and modifying cool things. I have a soft spot for tube-based radios as well as tube-based guitar and bass amps. Outside of radio, I enjoy playing music -- I play guitar, bass, and keyboards (Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes piano).

Check out the links on the left -- you might find some interesting information. The page's design may be simple, but hopefully the content is worthwhile.
