  • E-COMM Building (3301 Pender St., Vancouver, B.C.)
A successful second annual VE7 Regional CLARA YL2000 Conference was held Saturday, April 29th in the ECOMM Building in Vancouver, B.C. Speakers were very interesting, food was great and what fun was had by all meeting with other YLs from the Greater Vancouver Area and other parts of British Columbia! A new CLARA member from Salmon Arm, Gail VE7ARO attended along with Diana VE7XYL from Prince George. Many thanks to Tina VE7VEL and Jan VE7LET from Lions Bay for picking up two Vancouver Island, Parksville YLs Bev VE7BEV and Evelyn VE7EEW at Horseshoe Bay terminal.

Conference co-organizers Paulette Schouten VE7VPE and Heather Chen VE7WTX did a wonderful job! Paulette is President of VECTOR and Heather is Secretary for BCFMCA.

The program emphasis this Year 2000 was YL's - Being Prepared! Morning speakers were Debbie Cline, ESS Headquarters' Director for Burnaby and Brian Inglis, City of Vancouver, Task Force Leader for Urban search and Rescue.

Debbie discussed the importance of residents working with their neighbours in developing a neighborhood response plan and that "survival is a lot more than luck". We must be prepared for anything that occurs. A video of the 1989 Bay Area was shown.

Seven hours after the devastating November 1999 Turkey Earthquake, Brian flew to Istanbul, Turkey to work side by side with other International Task Forces. Slides of the destruction and efforts of response life saving teams, working tirelessly for days on end, were shown.

After lunch, Greg Wiseman, Emergency Vehicles Co-ordinator for the Greater Vancouver Emergency Disaster Services of the Salvation Army spoke on services they provide and invited everyone outside to take a look at their Emergency Response Vehicle. Drivers with Amateur Radio Licenses are needed to drive to Emergencies and Exercises .... If you would like to volunteer, email [email protected] .

Lastly, Paulette, VE7VPE spoke on VECTOR and Fred, VE7LNX gave a very informative presentation on what is involved in Field Day Planning.

On behalf of CLARA and everyone present, VE7 CLARA Area Representative Elizabeth Baggoo, VE7TLK, VA7TK thanked all individuals who helped make this year's YL2000 Conference a success.
