Your relay coil will of course be inductive and unless you have a snubber,
you will get 'spikes' every time you switch it on or off.
The are various snubber schemes you can use: diode, RC or C. You might just
want to try strapping a capacitor across the coil - something fairly
arbitary like a 0.1uF. You will probably find this improves things no end.
Snubbers can slow down the tun-on and turn-ff times of the relay - but in
your case, I doubt this would be a problem.
