Amateur Radio

Amateur Radio Is a hobby where by the interested party is able to communicate with other interested parties via the medium of Radio Waves. These people are intitled to, after passing nessecary exams, use the modes of Morse code, Voice, Data and video on allocated bands in the Medium Frequency, High Frequency, Very High Freq., Ultra High Frequency and above bands.

The licence holder is also able to design and build their own transmitting and receiving equipment and also modify existing transmitting and receiving equipment to operate on the amateur bands.

The hobby has been about since the discovery by Marconi of Radio Wave propergation.

I Myself, have been a licenced amateur radio operator since 1988. I have always had an interest in electronics and radio since a very early age.

I hold an ACA intermediate class licence where by I had to pass exams in electronic theory, Regulations pertaining to the Amateur Radio hobby and Morse code at a level of 5 words per minute (WPM).

This entitles me to access to the following bands........

Some of the more common modes of communication used on all bands are....

RTTY (Radio Teletype)
ASCII (another form of RTTY)
Packet Radio (error free comms via radio)
CW (morse code)
AM (Ampitude modulated Voice)
FM (frequency modulated Voice)
SSB (Single Sideband Suppressed carrier Voice)

FAX (facsimile)
SSTV (Slow Scan Television ('freeze frame' images in an audio bandwidth))
FSTV (Fast Scan Television (Normal Television transmission))

I have also sent signals in both audio and video on the 10 GHz (10,000 MHz) band. It is a very rewarding hobby where one has the ability to chat to many many people from all over the world and make many friends with a common interest.
