Johnston Island completes chemical agent container disposal

JOHNSTON ISLAND, Pacific (Army News Service July 6, 2000) - The U.S. Army completed a milestone and began to work toward achieving its last June 30 at the Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System. Having completed the disposal of all 66 VX ton containers July 6, the Army is now in a position to look forward to the disposal of its last VX munition type - the 13,302 land mines stockpiled on Johnston Island - and the upcoming facility closure.

The VX campaign is the third and final agent campaign left to be completed at JACADS. Over the past ten years, over 399,000 munitions and bulk agent have been destroyed at the facility. This amounts to over 96.7% of the island's stockpile, constituting both the GB and HD nerve agent campaigns, VX nerve agent 155mm projectiles and rejects, M55 rockets and warheads, eight-inch projectiles, and now ton containers.

JACADS is the country's first fully integrated chemical weapons facility, and the Army has operated it safely since 1990. Currently, the Army is partnering with several federal oversight agencies to plan the closure of the JACADS facility. Closure activities are currently scheduled to begin in January 2001.
