Hi !, my name is Rudi Venter, I have been a licensed
Ham since 1996 and a SWL long before that when I was still a school
boy. I build my first transmitter when I was 10 years old. My previous
calls were ZR6VE (restricted 50 MHz and above only) and later upgraded to
ZS6VER, I still hold the call V51VE. I was born in Namibia (Windhoek) but I grew
up in Pretoria in South Africa.
At the moment I am actively using the
calls ZS6DX and ZS2M depending on where I am in South Africa.
I enjoy contesting and DX'ing, mostly on CW but I can
also be found
on SSB and RTTY on the odd occasion. I also love playing
with radios,
modifying or improving and home-brew is always fun.
I am also a keen
VHF/UHF operator as I find the challenge of weak signal work great fun. All my
VHF/UHF antennas are homebrew and I am also building amplifiers for the higher
bands.
Apart from playing with radios and electronics in
general I
also enjoy nature, hiking and nature photography as well as astronomy,
specifically astrophotography. Building and restoring aircraft, full-size
and RC models, and flying
them, has been a passion for a very long time so I can often be found at the
flying field on a Saturday morning, or working on an aircraft.
I am also
competing in a few RC classes like scale (F4C/F4H), power gliders (F5J) and I
have, in the past also competed in pattern (Aerobatics, F3A). At the moment,
late 2022/early 2023, I have started practicing for IMAC/LSA, large scale
aerobatics contests, it combines my love for scale with my love for aerobatics.
For me amateur radio has become a way of life, I take it into account where ever I am or what ever I do.
