Carol Johnston - ZL1AJL I have been a member of WARO for 30 years and I am currently a sponsored member of ALARA, YLRL and YL ISSB. In the past I was also a sponsored member of BYLARA, CLARA and DLYL. I currently sponsor WARO memberships for Darleen WD5FQX, Judy VK3AGC and Olga DJ0MCL. I have participated in 3 DX-peditions in the 1970s. Firstly operating from the Chatham Islands in 1974 with Marion ZL1BKL. In 1977 I was a member of the team who went to Raoul Island (in the Kermadec Group) along with Dave ZL1AMN, Marion ZL1BKL and Eddie ZL1BKX. In 1998 I returned to Chatham Island, along with Marion ZL1BKL, in a team lead by Chuck Rademacher. In the past I was a keen award hunter and contest
operator winning the WARO contest on 3 occasions (1977,1978,1986) and finishing second in 1987. I was also a
member of several winning National Field Day contest
teams.
Over the years I have served on several radio related committees. I was Treasurer of WARO (1982-1985), Treasurer of the Papakura Radio Club (1984-1989) and Secretary of the Papakura Radio Club (1994-1996). I also served on the organising committee for 3 NZART conferences. Other radio related activities included being a member of the communications team for the annual international car rally from 1979 to 1998 and assisting in the provision of communications for several community events. I was also a member of the Auckland Regional Headquarters Civil Defence communications team from 1979 to 1995. Today my involvement in amateur radio is minimal, mainly 2m communications from Waiheke Island where Dave ZL1AIC and I have been working on the building of our retirement home and as a consequence spend most weekends over on the island.
This year I started going to classes to take up a new
hobby of making teddy bears and unfortunately class night
conflicts with the local radio club meeting night. |
