Pye Reporter 3 Mobile Radiotelephone

During the 1960s Police and Ministry of Transport radios operated in the 40MHz Low VHF band, using radios like the Pye Reporter 3, and later the Cambridge and Continental .

During this period repeaters were introduced which allowed reliable car to car communication which had not been possible with the earlier simplex system. By the mid 1960s, six channels were allocated for police use. Auckland had 2 channels - one for the "Southern Division" based at Otahuhu, and one for Central, Northern and Western Divisions based at Auckland Central.

The 40MHz band was not a success because of the high level of interference from both NZ and overseas (mainly U.S. Police and Fire services).
