This is I find, the easiest way to cut the strips from the plank. Trying to handle a 16 foot, one inch plank alone can really be tough at my age. I cut the 3/4" pieces from the plank using a skill saw, with a fence, to guide the saw. It takes a while, but Kayakers are rarely in a hurry, otherwise they would be in cigarette boats. Since I don't have a planer, I then cut all 4 sides of the strip on a table saw that has a GOOD sharp blade. The strip end up as 3/4" x 5/8" on the final cut. When you buy rough lumber a 1' plank may vary from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8" I have seen them even thicker. SAVE ALL the scrap, you will find uses for it as trim pieces, later on in the construction. | |
