building a boat #1
What to do

KEEL......The heart of the Boat

NOTE the taper on the keel................
I don't have a good pic of the keel. but here goes.....Take a piece of 1"x 4" x 14' Clear White Pine. It must be a really clean, knot free piece of wood. Most good lumber yards will have some, but you will look at a lot of them before you find a straight one, or at least a fairly straight one.
Screw it down on the HOG. pop a line down the center. Mark one end bow, and the other stern. write it on the piece or you will live to regret it. ( the voice of experience. )
The entire boat will be built measuring either from the center line or the STERN end of the keel.
Unless you are the luckiest person on earth, when you pop the line the edges of the board will NOT be even from center, don't worry about it. You are going to be working from the line and the edges will be cut off anyway.

+ + + + + + + NOTE + + + + + + +
EVEN THOUGH THE STERN END IS ZERO FOR MEASUREMENTS, THE RIBS BEGIN WITH #1 IN THE BOW.

Station measurements and rib patterns for the 15 footer are on page13.

Now, take the STATION measurements and using the STERN end as zero mark the stations on the keel.
( The Stations are the positions where the Ribs will be placed.)
Each station will have a number. write it ON the keel board. Then VERY carefully draw a line that is 90 degrees to the popped center line, This is really the heart of your boat, so take the time to see that every line is correct.
+++++++++++++
You should now have a long board, screwed to the HOG that has a perfectly straight line, end to end, and station lines drawn all the way across it at a 90 degree angle to the center line.
+++++++++++++
Flat Spot measurements for the 15 footer are:

Bow end = 0.5"__Rib #1 = 0.75"__ Rib #2 = 3"__ Rib #3 = 4"__ Rib #4 = 4"__
Rib #5 = 4"__ Rib #6 = 2.25" Stern end = 0.5".

If you dont have a list for the Flat Spots, take the ribs you have cut from the plywood and measure the flat spot on the bottom of each (none should exceed 4", if any do recut it a bit ). If the flat spot is 3" measure out 1 1/2" from each side of the center line and mark it.
When you have done all the stations, go to each mark and drive a sturdy brad into the spot. Take a piece of the scrap that you saved and rip it to roughly 1/4" x 3/8". Lay this strip against the brads with the 3/8 down so it is stiff when you bend it,and put another brad to keep it there. When all the brads are in place look it over, it should be a fair line. if it has sharp bends ease up on the outer brad a bit till it looks smooth.
Take a sharp pencil and draw a line along that strip on the inside. Do the same to the other side of the board and cut carefully along the line so you end up with a keel that tapers at the ends. The measurement at each end should be the thickness of your plywood for the bow and stern pieces.
Unscrew it, turn it over and round the edges.
The keel is done save for sanding. Turn it back up right and screw it to the hog, try to keep it lined with the center line, it is not critical, but it is less confusing to the eye.
