The 2003 Awards Banquet

With this years attendance at nearly sixty, the MARC on Saturday evening January 18th celebrated another successful year with our annual Awards Banquet. Held again at the Perry Grange, the evening began with a terrific family style dinner followed by the presentation of our annual service awards. If you missed this years dinner you missed out on another great club event, filled with lots of fun and great company.

Betty Hall, Emergency Service Director - Red Cross, Western StarkAfter dinner we settled in for the evenings only agenda, the presentation of our annual service awards. Outgoing President Gene Beckwith - W8KXR as emcee opened the ceremony by introducing our special guest, Ms Betty Hall, the new Emergency Service Director of Red Cross, Western Stark County. Betty spoke of her new responsibilities here and was looking forward to a continued close working relationship with the MARC. Betty was formally introduced by club member Saundra Becker - N8TZB, who is also an avid volunteer at the Western Red Cross.

Dale Storey, KB8LWP presents the Field Day TrophyThe evening continued with the introduction of Dale Storey - KB8LWP of the Canton Amateur Radio Club who graciously presented the Field Day Trophy back to the MARC. The club has been the recipient of the coveted trophy since its creation four years ago when the two clubs decided to establish a friendly competition to generate greater interest in this yearly ARRL sponsored operating event. Dale promised that 2003 will be another story !

It was then time for the introduction of the 2003 Service Awards. Awarded each year in several categories, the recognition honors those club members whose exceptional effort continues to promote the highest principles of the MARC and the Amateur Radio Service.

The Bob Rogers, W8NWR Field Day Award winner Don Wade - W8DEA. Field Day is about many things, endurance, operating, hard work plus enthusiasm. Qualities that Don demonstrates not only at Field Day but all throughout the year. Don's winning spirit runs high during Field Day and throughout the year !

The Technical Merit Award was given to Dan Anastis - N8DZM. After a long absence, Dan reintroduced the club to the art and fun of direction finding. Dan returned from Dayton last year with a DF'ing idea. He constructed a Fox Automatic Transmitter and has been the sponsor of several successful Fox Hunts. This aspect of Amateur Radio is finding a new following and has helped to increase both antenna knowledge and operating efficiency in our elusive search for the FOX !

The George Turkal, W8YHU A-1 Operator Award winner Terry Russ. Principle webmaster of the club's website, Terry has through the site, promoted operating awareness both within the club and the community. More people now have the opportunity to see and understand the service provided by the MARC than ever before.

The Joe Turkal, K8EKG DX Award winner Pete Wilder - WD8PTW. A long time club member and hobbyist, Pete has for the past several years been chasing lots of DX, especially on six meters and is currently working on a high power six meter amplifier that will certainly help break through the pile ups !

Our top Service Award for the year is the William J. North Ham of the Year Award and is presented to club secretary Linda Finley - K8MOO. Now entering her fourth term as club secretary, Linda has continued to bring dedication and professionalism to the role as well as a general enthusiasm to Amateur Radio. Always willing to volunteer her time to club events, Linda is also very active with the Western Stark Chapter of the American Red Cross serving numerous positions including making many "after midnight" responses to assist with community aid. An extra class operator both in the hobby and in the community, Linda is very deserving of this prestigious award.

Our last awards presentation for the evening and perhaps the most popular are the issuing of The Old Man "Bill North" Humorous Awards, where members are recognized for their somewhat embarrassing  moments over the previous year. Moderated each year by senior club member Perry Ballinger - W8AU, we were pleased to present the following awards to a crop of very good natured recipients.

To Dennis Finley - K1FFA, the "OOPS - I'M ON THE WRONG FREQUENCY DURING THE MASSILLON HOLIDAY PARADE 146.52 OPERATOR AWARD." Seems Dennis punched in the wrong frequency on his HT, took to his parade station and spent the entire parade wondering why there was no radio traffic at all !

To Gary Blagg - KC8IHR, the "DIPPIN DUMPSTER AWARD". Not wanting to let that elusive deal after the hamfest go by, Gary was found head first in the dumpster searching around. Gary - what are we going to do with you !!, careful looking around inside a dumpster - you never know what you might find !

To Igor Nikishin - WB8KEO, the "FIELD DAY PHANTOM AWARD." Normally our infamous midnight operator who shuns the daylight, Igor mustered up the courage and defied the dreaded daylight to stay throughout the night and into the next day, breaking the Full Moon Field Day Spell !

IGOR - WB8KEO, Winner of "The Field Day Phantom Award"

To Pete Wilder - WD8PTW, the "OUT OF MY WAY 6 METER DX HOG AWARD" for his fearless endeavors to break the six meter DX barrier with "More Power". Don't stand in the way of a man in pursuit of a quest or you may get a hefty RF burn !!!

To Gary Kline - WC8W, "THE HOOVER EMERTIS AWARD". Gary, along with several club members could always be heard every morning before sunup conducting their own "Morning Show" covering a range of topics both radio and work related. As dependable as our favorite alarm clock and a lot more entertaining ! Gary retired at the end of 2002 with over 37 years of service at the Hoover Company.

To new club president Richard Ross - KA8ZQH, The "HIDDEN TRANSMITTER DF'ER DUFFER AWARD". Rich has enjoyed joining in recently during our monthly Fox Hunts, but it seems Rich was the object of great interest on the Massillon Police Department during our last event. Rich must have looked a little strange with his DF'ing station as the police decided to follow him for quite some time while he searched for the fox !

And lastly to Perry Ballinger - W8AU, Jim Farriss - WA8GXM, and Terry Russ - N8ATZ, the "DOCTOR OF RADIO COMMUNICATIONS DEGREE, or "DORK AWARD". Heavily involved in local emergency communications, these rather impressive looking sorts (or is it the three stooges !), can't seem to pass the ARRL elementary level 1 EC test !. Jim and Terry have tried twice. Cheer up guys, they say the third time is the charm, right !!!!!

What a way to end an awards ceremony !!!!

After an evening of fun and frolic, outgoing President Gene Beckwith formally passed the gavel of office Richard Ross - KA8ZQH who formally introduced the Executive board for 2003.

Congratulations are in order to all award recipients and looking forward toward another great year in 2003 !
