W8CQK CLUB HISTORY

[HOME]    [HISTORY]    [LINKS]    [FIELD DAY]    [CLUB SHACK]

Our club was founded by Battelle staff members in 1946 when owning a radio meant using military surplus from WWII, home brewing or building kits such Heathkit or Knight. The club has had a shack in various locations on company property and now is in the 10 story corporate headquarters building. The shack on the 10th floor of this building and the antennas are on the  top of the building. The W8CQK/R repeater is located in the shack along with the HF and 2m stations.

Club Formation

The announcement of the club formation appeared in the November, 1946 issue of “Battelle News”:

With the construction and operation of a radio “ham” station as a common interest, fourteen staff members have formed a radio club with headquarters on the third floor of the stenographic annex. In addition to operating the stations, the members will also study radio and electronics and build various types of radio sets and perhaps television receivers.

At present, the club is building a transmitter and antenna from Army surplus for their station, and most of the members are studying courses of code and readio principles necessary to obtain an operator’s license for broadcasting.

Bob R. Adams is president of the organization, and Francis Todd is vice-president, secretary and treasurer. As yet the club is not holding regular meetings, but anyone interested in joining the group may do so by contacting Adams. Other members of the club are Ed Blair, Walt Engel, Dave Minton, Tom Hall, Howard Wright, Butch Buccione, Bob Kinnear, Jack Kura, Bob McMaster, Maury Banta, Hank Hull and Frank Joseph.
