T.R.A.S.H. HISTORY - HOW IT ALL BEGAN

T.R.A.S.H. began by digging surplus commericial radio (tube) equipment out of a dumpster in the early '80's
(One of the original GE repeaters Dave built in the '80's, is still in use today! - node 27081)

Now we utilize state-of-the-art (mostly Motorola SLR5700, or RKR1225) repeaters at all of our sites

T.R.A.S.H. is a network of remotely controlled Amateur Radio repeaters and base stations, (also known as Remote Stations or Remote Bases), operating primarily in the USA VHF/UHF Amateur Radio bands

Operating (almost) continuously for over 39 years, our founder (David B. Camp W5DBC (ex WD5HTQ)-SK, and his XYL Diane Camp W5PDC) pioneered and refined many concepts of linked radio networks that are still in use today, inspiring many who followed

The original T.R.A.S.H. logbook

TRASH Logbook

(first entery dated 25-Dec-1985)
Christmas Day

"Installed GE 330W on 52.525"
"Installed GE Mastr-Pro repeater R 447.450, TX 442.450 35W"
(KHEY site - El Paso, TX)

The six meter repeater worked quite well until Jan 6, 1986, it blew the main breaker, causing the entire KHEY site to go dark. A quick run up the hill in the dark to reset it. A few days later on Jan 17, 1986, the breaker blew again. Another quick run up the hill to reset it. On Mar 4, 1986 the breaker tripped again causing the site engineer for KHEY, Herb Rand, to advise Dave (HTQ) to disconnect TRASH until new wiring was installed on a seperate breaker. Mar 9, 1986 a new circuit was installed just for TRASH. The 6-meter 330 W final was bypassed and ran only on the 50 W exciter

Many entries in the logbook over the years up until the last entry Nov, 1992 when TRASH was no longer at the KHEY site
(Thanks to Martin WB5LJO for recovering the "lost" logbook years later)

MANY people helped TRASH grow from a single site in El Paso, to many more thereafter. Including 2 meter & 70cm FM repeaters, link radios, hand-built repeater controllers, 6 meter repeaters, packet radio digipeaters, a CP/M-based packet BBS system (W7FED), and once was an authorized JPARA CACTUS affiliate (tnx to N5IA-SK)

Founder Dave Camp (sk) - W5DBC (ex WD5HTQ)
2008 - CAMP SR., DAVID B., 63, Services are private. Survived by wife Diane Camp, son David B. Camp Jr., daughter Judy Camp. Arrangements by San Jose Funeral Home East.

Mentioned in the logbook from 1985-1992;
Herb Rand (KHEY Engineer), Martin WB5LJO, "Faz" N5FAZ, Neil Addis W7FED (ex WA5JXY), Dan W8KMX, Paul KC5YD, John KA5TRQ, Jim N5FKW, Bill KD5XN, Boyd KB5JR, Vern KA5WCA, Karen KA5WDO, John N5ICP, Lynn KA5O, Bill K5KKO, Earl K5FTE, Rick N5LCR, Roy N5RG, Rick KC5EJ, Karl K5DI, Shawn N7LQ (ex WB7TDI), Albert KB5GZZ, Ben KD5SM, Mack NK5T, Rex N5ZRF

After Dave's passing in 2008, Diane Camp W5PDC (his XYL), said Dave's last words about TRASH were: "Neil gets TRASH and all that goes with it, because I know he will keep it going..if he wants it"

Of course I did! Took MONTHS to clean out the original "TRASH CENTRAL"!

"So, I am doing my best to honor Dave and all of his incredible ideas and hard work that went into TRASH and I promised to keep it alive as long as I am able. Luckily Mike Olson KB6JYF has the same goals and T.R.A.S.H. wouldn't be what it is today without his help. I owe my entire radio communications career with Motorola to Dave Camp and what he taught me" - Neil Addis
