W5AW ~ BSARC

Welcome to the 2021 Projects page.

We have a few different ideas and all are focused on building antennas, in one case a dummy load.

Brief descriptions and links as follows:

The Dummy Load project.
This project appeard in the November 2018 edition of QST magazine. The suggestion came from Bruce Jaeger [KE7TDR]. Henry Hunter [KN3RD] had one that he had built and even sent some pictures of his. Take a look at the images and links to get a better idea on what is involved. The QST article also has a side project to build a meter. Support and interest for this will determine how we puruse it.

The Magnetic Loop Antenna
The next possibility, and much more involved, is a magnetic loop antenna. The small loop antenna is known as a magnetic loop since it behaves electrically as a coil (inductor). It couples to the magnetic field of the radio wave in the region near the antenna, in contrast to monopole and dipole antennas which couple to the electric field of the wave. Roll Up Slim Jim Antenna
And the third project is more along the lines of our first antenna project where we used a tape measure to make one that is directional for radio direction finding and fox hunting. Here is a YouTube link on that one:
