As a Net Control (NC ) Operator you may be interested in some of the issues that can arise with each assignment.. Some of the sites are much more challenging than others.  In most cases the operators at those locations are aware of the issues and have tried to compensate for these problems.

Your job is to keep the net running, and track the three mobile vehicles.  The net manager will also keep you informed about his location.  You do not need to "track"him.

You should not be a repository for other information.  The Race Director, the Command Post or the Net Manager are the persons responsible for this.

In the event that someone needs to be picked up have the Pick Up Van take the information directly from the support site. It is not your responsibility to "carry" or "relay" that information.   The same goes for the transfer of supplies and or equipment.  Have the stations talk to each other.  Pass the information directly, not through a relay station.

Work to have "dead" air between each contact.  If a station calls you and it is not an "Emergency" pause prior to recognizing them, to give other stations a chance to get into the Que.   Keep up with who is up next  and who is on "hold."

This is your net to operate.  You are the boss.  Be sure that you are in charge!

Don't think on the air - tell the net to stand-by and un-key if you need a moment to think or relax.

1 Director Director The equipment in this vehicle is a temporary installation. Often the operator is out of the vehicle.  Administrative questions should be directed to this vehicle.  Keeping  in contact with this vehicle at the Cliffs, Canal and Lock 34 could be difficult.  Please keep track of where this vehicle is at all times.   When handing off to a new NC pass along the location of this vehicle. Once the lead runner leaves the Dam 4 area, this vehicle usually follows him.  It is no longer necessary to keep the Director aware of the lead runner.
2 Mobile 2 Mobile 2 The equipment in this vehicle is a temporary installation. 12 Weaverton Cliffs Cliffs The operator at this site usually runs a dual-band repeater from his car which is about 1/2 to 3/4 miles from the cliffs..  Other stations in this area would be wise to see if they can make use of this setup.

Direct communication to this area is almost impossible with out a dual-band set up or a beam and some significant power.

13 Weaverton at the Canal Canal The operator from this location usually runs high power and a large beam antenna.  (This operator may consider requesting the ability to make use of the dual-band setup at the Cliffs. They will open and close about the same time.
14 Lock 34 Station #4 Lock 34 Lock 34 is just up the Canal from Harper's Ferry.  It is a difficult location from which to  operate. Again a dual-band operation would be an advantage.
15 Dargan Bend # 5 Dargan Dargan in a  low spot with a major hill between it and the repeater.  It is a difficult location from which to  operate. Again a dual-band operation would be an advantage. However, the operators here have been operating from their car with some power.
16 Antietam #7 Antietam Dargan down low with a major hill between it and the repeater.  It is a difficult location from which to   operate. Again a dual-band operation would be an advantage. However, the operators here have been operating from their car with some power.
17 Rumsey Bridge #8 Rumsey At one time this was called Shephardstown Bridge.  It shares much the same kind of difficulty as the stations above.  It is located at the bend of the road near the Rumsey Bridge.
18 Snyder’s Landing #9 Snyders
19 Mondel  #11 (Taylor’s Landing) Mondel In 2010 the location of this aid station was moved.  It is not easily serviced by any of the support staff, radio operators or the EMS personnel.
20 Dam #4 Station #12 This position is in a very low spot with hills surrounding it. It is possible to operate from this location with an HT, but that is difficult .  The antenna must be about 3-4 feet above head level.   Again a dual-band operation would be advantageous.

Downsville No specific comments regarding this position.
22 Command Post Command The command post has direct communication with 9-11-1 and the Park Service. Emergency calls should be handled by this station. At times important information may be brought to the net from this station
23 Canal Sweeper Sweeper Keeps us informed about the location of the last participant and about those who are potential drop outs due to not meeting time limits
