"YEAR in REVIEW" & "STATE of the CLUB"
January 18th was the annual VHF Sweepstakes contest. Eight club members were available to operate. We operated in the 2 meter, 6 meter, 220 and 440 bands. Some equipment was loaned by Bruce, K2RPM. We logged 80 QSOs in 26 grids for a score of 2418 points. Food was plentiful and all had a great time.
In February, the Nominating Committee submitted the following named individuals for the annual election:
President;
Dave Arruzza WA1UUD
Vice President; Carl Passafiume N1ORW
Secretary; May Blakley, WA1EHK
Treasurer; Ted Kaszuba, W1ZQT
Communications Officer; Bob Giuliani, N2BQA
March: The slate of officers ran unopposed. All officers were installed by one vote cast by the Secretary.
June was a busy month. The club ran Field Day as 3D class. We logged 130 CW contacts and 110 on phone using computerized logging. Total points were 1052.
As with all contests, the food and refreshments committee was always in high gear. We reunited with some old friends and again said hello to our usual "annual" visitors. We all left the event on Sunday afternoon as happy, tired and over-stuffed hams.
Many small events happened during the Summer and Fall. There was a lot of maintenance work on rotators, rigs, antennas, power supplies and administration.
The club Historian finally was able to secure the clubs Incorporation papers. They are now on permanent display, behind glass at the club.
Off line activity remains high with nightly nets on Monday (17m), Tuesday (12m), Thursday (160m). Wednesdays and Fridays remain informal gatherings at the clubhouse. FM 2m simplex remains a primary form of communication at 146.55 MHz.
The nightly nets have generated significant interest amongst the members and have succeeded in bringing many guests into our nets. This is true hamming; as overheard at one of the meetings;
". . . operating 160 meters during the Summer is not for the faint-of-heart."
The usual Christmas party produced another wall-swelling crowd. As with Field Day, many old acquaintances were remade and a few lost souls managed to find the clubhouse and seek refuge from that bitter cold night. As always, there was too much food, just the right amount of merriment and a lot of good ham companionship.
We look forward to 1998 with anticipation and enthusiasm.
Respectfully submitted: Bob Betts, N1KPR (Historian, SARC/W1ORS)
