SARA SUNDAY NIGHT NET We encourage all of the SARA members to join in the informal net on the Stamford Repeater every Sunday night at 8 PM. After about a half hour of friendly discussion, we play the “Amateur Radio Newsline” with the latest happenings in amateur radio. Make yourself heard, join the net.

Squelch Burst: “We need new articles. This is your newsletter so why not write an article related to Amateur Radio. Try to write an article that you feel other members would be interested in. We need someone to continue ”Ask Elmer Column” . Any articles or correspondence contact Dick WA1VUU.

E-Mail Squelch Burst: We are asking SARA members to give their E-mail addresses to Dick, WA1VUU so that the club newsletter can be sent by E-mail thus saving postage!. Your address will not be published and will be kept confidential. Please make sure Dicks e-mail address is not blocked. Postal rates are going up next year. Contact Dick.WA1VUU.

We need your ideas and input. What activities would you like the club to participate in? We also need your help in organizing these activities as well as participating in them. How would you increase club membership? Communicate your ideas and comments to any of the board members or to the editors of the Squelch Burst. Your input is very important to the continuing health of the club.

SARA Minutes of the Meeting 8/5/04

Fred K1FC started the SARA meeting at 8:10 pm.

Public Services Fred reported that we have a signup sheet for the Stamford Denmark Friendship Race. Date Sunday September 12, 2004. Location will be at the Stamford Yacht Club. SARA needs volunteers! Contact Jeanine KY1Q..

Check out the Stamford Yacht Club web site.

Old Business. Fred reported that on this years Field Day we had a grand total of 2635 points and having learned some valuable lessons, we can do better next year.

ARES John N1EOF who represents ARES for SARA and is OES, for the Connecticut Section.  John mentioned that ARES is on alert for New York City especially with this convention coming up soon. We have two staging areas in Connecticut. I don’t want to talk too much about it but be aware that we are on call. More information on SARA & ARES at: www.qsl.net/w1ee/ares.htm

Fred mentioned that if you are interested in taking the ARRL on line Amateur Radio Emergency Communications courses the cost is $45.00 dollars. If you complete the course the money is refundable. This involves ham radio but there may be situations where you may need to operate in other services in an emergency. I highly recommend that you take this course.

More information on the courses at: www.arrl.org/cce/courses.html

Fred is working very hard to find speakers for the SARA meetings. If you have any suggestions please contact Fred, K1FC.

Fred K1FC then gave an interesting talk and demonstrated a free antenna modeling program called MMANA. More photos of the SARA meeting at: www.qsl.net/w1ee/ctsara.htm

MMANA MM Antenna Analyzer by JE3HHT - Makoto Mori.

More information and free download check the web site at: www.qsl.net/mmhamsoft/mmana/index.htm

Meeting ended around 10:00 pm.

SARA Web Site I have been working diligently on the SARA web site and reprinting the newsletter on the SARA web site. Dick WA1VUU does a good job and prints the newsletter on paper each month and I convert it to a web page. Dick then sends the newsletter link by e mail to members that have signed up to receive it. I am always open for new ideas and suggestions.

I am using QSL NET for the SARA web site which is free and very popular. The problem I am having is that it can be very slow for people to connect to at times. Another problem is that it can be down (Not working) for hours or even days. When loading files or photos to the SARA web page QSL NET is almost always very slow or may not even work. These problems seem to get worse at certain times.

I am suggesting that we change to a more reliable URL. We should also register a name. We will need to find out the availability of a web address. Example: www.w1ee.org/ .

I suggest that we use United Online, Inc. which is a leading provider of consumer Internet subscription services through a number of brands, including NetZero and Juno.

This would be their starter package. Check their web page at: www.freeservers.com/

The cost with a registered web address and set up fee would be about $9.75 a month. This cost will be slightly less the following year. Of course the less we send out each month on paper the less postage we will be paying. This will help justify the cost.

GNARC was spending $84.00 dollars a month on postage. Now they are only sending out 10 newsletters via mail which are printed directly from the web. Every other member is e mailed each month with the newsletter. This can save a lot of money not to mention time. It is not easy printing and assembling 120 newsletters each month! GNARC Newsletter is located at www.gnarc.info/ .  This link is the same each month and updated. A new newsletter comes out toward the end of the month. This is the same company and package United Online, Inc. which I have set up.

Please note. The official GNARC club web page is not United Online.

I have one last topic. The Message Board that we were using has been closed down as of August 1. I had no choice but to set up a new message board. This is hosted For FREE By ProBoards.

This new message board is very easy to use and has many use full features.

So far I have four categories:

Ham Radio General Board you can talk about anything here or almost anything.

Classified Ads Message Board Classified Ads Service. For Sale.

 Events. example club fox hunt.

Ask Fred K1FC. New to ham radio or have a technical question just ask Fred.

The link for the message board is on the SARA web site and August SARA newsletter. You do not need a password. I hope people will use it.

This newsletter and Minutes of the Meeting will be on the SARA web site.

Squelch Burst:  We need new articles. This is your newsletter so why not write an article related to Amateur Radio. Try to write an article that you feel other members would be interested in.  We need new Ask Elmer questions desperately. Dick will be editing the Squelch Burst. Contact Dick WA1VUU.
