As it says in the ARES Field Resource Manual, “The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public interest when disaster strikes.”  Any radio amateur can join ARES and this past Thursday, September 5th, 15 members of the Stamford Amateur Radio Association requested signup forms to join or renew their membership with ARES.

This is particularly significant in these present times and under current circumstances in this country.  Many radio amateurs have and always will be willing and even eager to “help out” whenever the need comes for radio communications at a particular event or at the scene of a tragedy.  What has changed in these times is that only those persons who are presently up-to-date on the protocols for ARES disaster ops and who hold ARES membership cards will probably be allowed into a site to “work” the radios.  Security has tightened and there will always be persons out there who want to come to disasters for their own curiosity, not for the good of the victims.  These are what I like to refer to as “rubber neckers” who are trying to get a view of the bloody victim of the car accident as they slow down to pass.

Joining ARES at this time in our Nation’s history and climate is one of the greatest things you can do to serve the public as an amateur radio operator.   ARES now is offering a free Level I training courses online.  This is possible because of two things:  the creation of the Homeland Security Department has given rise to funding for emergency communications and monies were sent to the ARRL for this purpose.  Also, and more importantly, United Technologies Corporation in East Hartford specifically agreed to fund this – usually $45.00 - course to cover all who sign up for it.  The response has been enormous, and most of the classes have already filled.  One more free session is available.

To become involved in taking one or more of the training programs available in emergency radio at this time, Set your browser to: https://www.arrl.org/

Then, in the upper right hand corner, enter your ARRL member name (callsign) and your password (or it will direct you to a page where you can then get yourself registered with a “name” and “password.”  Once you have checked in as a member, you will have access to any “internal” part of the ARRL organization and its information.
Now, set your browser to:
https://www.arrl.org/forms/cce/reg.html?co_num=EC-001
This will take you to the listing of courses for emergency radio communications.  You want the Level I course sponsored by UTC.

In the meantime, send your name, address, callsign, Email address and phone numbers to:
Dr. John H. Gagnon, N1EOF, OES, CT Section
233 Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford, CT / 06905  /  203-326-5657
He will be more than happy to get you the signup form for ARES and make you an active ARES member.
