Volunteering...
When I was in high school, I was asked to help provide communications at various events as part of the ham club at the local “Y”. It was alot
of fun. Not just the challenge of setting up a portable station, but the opportunity to help people and explain what amateur radio is all about. The bug bit me!
Setting up stations with my fellow ham club members including some pretty significant field day outings were fun! I enjoyed working as a team,
learning new technologies, procedures and equipment and from time to time able to really help someone.
Many years later, with some prodding by a friend of mine, I decided to join the local first aid and rescue squad. I ended up as radio officer.
My amateur experience was extremely valuable in testing radios with various pieces of equipment, installing a new antenna system and reviewing new equipment purchases. I became an EMT and have since ridden on
hundreds of emergency medical calls (When you dial 911: I might be the fellow that shows up!)
First Aid and Rescue (and I assume Fire fighting too) is a similar opportunity to continue learning, work as team, apply new skills and
(obviously) help people. I credit amateur radio with creating the volunteer in me.. Thanks!
