What Does Jesus (PBUH) Mean To Muslims?

An Italian friend of mine had sent an email with a query about Jesus (PBUH).
***************************************************************
He wrote and I quote:

"I'm Christian and I think that Muslim, Christian, Jew trust in the same God. God is one and is the same, the difference is in how to pray. I don't understand people that make war or terrorism in the name of God. I think we are all brothers not enemies. I wish you a Marry Christmas and Peace New year 2006."

An interesting thought! I had sent him a detailed reply which I repeat below (with small modifications).

According to Islam, Jesus Christ was a great prophet who did lot of miracles with God's permission. His birth itself was a miracle. He was born to Virgin Mary without a father. This was the command of Almighty God.

Islam gives very high status to Jesus Christ (Peace Be Upon Him) and Mary. One entire chapter of Holy Qur'an is in the name of Mary. Islam proclaims that Mary is pure and righteous.

Jesus is mentioned, by name, in the Quran over 25 times while, Muhammad's name appears only five times. In the Quran, the Muslim Holy Book, God revealed in chapter 3 verses 45-46, "Behold! The angels said; 'O Mary! God giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God. He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. And he shall be (of the company) of the righteous.'"

Around 1.5 Billion of world muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet of God and have very great regard for him.

It is only due to lack of proper understanding of faiths that lot of ill will has been created.

The three dominant monotheistic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam have deeply rooted beliefs that can be traced to the same origins. They are the three branches of a single tree. They are the branches of Prophet Abraham who proclaimed the message of Almighty God.

In the Quran 2:136, God revealed, "Say ye (Muslims): 'We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.'"

Islam severely condemns terrorism and says that if anyone has killed one man without valid reason, he has killed the entire humanity. Islam means peace and it asks its followers to submit to peace.

I would also like to emphasize that Muslims love Jesus; one of God's greatest messengers, held in high honor and his teachings live in our hearts and this in itself command respect.

So inter religious dialogue is needed between Christians and Muslims for the better understanding of each other so that lot of misconceptions can cleared. Only dialogue and friendship can break the barriers of intolerance. Lets encourage peace to prevail, for the truth to overcome falsehood, and build a better world; a world of peace, understanding and tolerance.
