How to get licence
To obtain any of the operating licenses, you have to take the respective Amateur Station Operators Certificate (ASOC) Examination conducted by the Wireless Planning & Co-ordinations (WPC) Wing of Ministry of Communications at the monitoring stations. ASOC examinations are also conducted at other places by the monitoring organization, when there are more than twenty applicants to appear from that place. The fee is Rs. 25/- for Advanced, Rs 20/- for Grade I and Rs 10/- for Grade II and Restricted Class examinations. For the SWL licence there is no examination and all you have to do is to send the completed application form to WPC along with the licence fee.
The ASOC examination has two parts. Part I is the written examination. In section I Radio Theory & Practice and Section II National and International Radio Regulations as applicable to the operation of an Amateur Radio Station. Part II is the Practical examination in sending and receiving Morse Code at 8 words per minute for Advanced and Grade I and 5 words per minute for Grade II. Restricted Class examination, there is no Morse Code test. These examinations are not very difficult and you can pass them with an - hour - a - day study for a couple of months. Many, from all walks of life, pass the examination every month and join the ever growing fraternity of Radio Amateurs around the world.
