Texas Adventist Emergency
Communications Newsletter
Vol. 1 Issue 7
Dear Members,
Hello Again! First of all I would like to apologize for
the extended length between the last and this newsletter. Things have been
a little hectic in my life here lately. I would also like to apologize for
those of you that didn’t receive the reminder for the meeting today.
Last week my computer crashed and I still have not got my PC back up to
the way it was. However, I will remedy the small problem of our mailing
list tonight.
We had a very good meeting today. There was a lot of
good experience passed on by those who went to Oshkosh, WI., last week. We
had very good training class also. Carl talked about amateur radio nets.
Explaining the difference between each of them and the proper procedures
to use in each of them. He also talked about the National Traffic System,
NTS. Explaining how it worked and how messages are passed from one place
to another. There is a good article in the September issue of QST, on page
50 I believe. It tells about the 50 years of service and implementation of
the NTS. If you get QST, please do take the time to read it, if not get in
contact with someone who does and get a copy of the article, it is a good
article.
Another topic was discussed in this months meeting.
Someone sent our president a flyer asking him to sponsor someone for a
26.5 mile walk-a-thon for Arthritis. This was put before the club as to
the possibility of our club providing communication for this event. The
membership voted that we should find out more about this walk-a-thon and
tabled it until more information could be presented to club for voting on
providing communications for this event. I brought up the idea that we
should take a donation in the club and this money be donated to the
Arthritis Foundation in the name of TAEC. The membership present thought
this was a good idea and in the next meeting we will be accepting
donations for our club donation. So, please, try to do as I will and try
not to forget your pocket books :-)
Our next meeting will be on September 19th. Please
everyone try to be there so we can continue to have a good turn-out. Thank
you for your continuing support and your help in all our functions. Hope
to see you at our next club meeting!!
What's New!
The Federal Communications Commission has developed a
system of licensing. It is called Universal Licensing System(UTS). This
system was developed to speed up the time it takes to process license
applications. As of August 16th, UTS has been implemented for amateur
radio.
Any Licensing done after the 16th, will not go through
unless you have registered with UTS. According to QST, all renewal,
address changed, etc. will be discarded unless s/he is registered with
UTS. The new system is designed especially for internet browsers. If you
would like to register with UTS go to, http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/ULS
In the September meeting we will be discussing some very
important issues. We need everyone there so please plan to attend.
Update
I'm a trying to change the looks of our newsletter. This
newsletter has so far been nothing but letters from our president. We
would like to have articles in the newsletter from members. We will decide
next club meeting when the newsletter will be sent out each month. Our
officers are working to get our club ARRL Affiliated. In order to do this
we must have an official newsletter. We have this one but it would be a
much better newsletter if there was a more purposeful use to it.
Therefore, our president has asked that I put some type of articles in it.
I'm asking for help from the membership on helping me write these
articles.
