IOTA Contest 1996 and 2001 winner and World Record holder team OH9A (Market Reef DX Association) activared Sandstrom Reef [Sandströminkari] (EU-173) in the IOTA Contest .
Actually the decision for participation was made only 2 weeks before the contest because of WRTC 2002 activities. OH1MDR and OH1MM formed Finland's team and OH1NOA was very much involved in the WRTC organization. Finally OH1NOA had to cancel his participation this year. As a new member we had Juho, OH1LLM in our team.
Anyway we had great time again and the pileups were very hectic sometimes. 3123 QSOs were made during the 24 hours contest period. The claimed score is about 8,7 million points.
The conditions were not so good as last year and we were not able to reach our last year's World record score over 12 millions points. 10 meters was very marginal this time and we could not get any runs going there.
The biggest improvement comparing to last year was the logging. This time we used Writelog software and we didn't have any problems with the computers during the whole contest! Even though one of the two PCs was a very old and slow 60MHz pentium.
Sandstrom reef is located about 4 kilometers
from the mainland. It is located about 20 kilometers south of city of Pori on southwest
coast of Finland. The size of the island is only about 100x50 meters. Sandstrom Reef is an
excellent QTH for ham radio. There are no other "inhabitants" on the island and
also the nearest neighbours are over 300 meters away. There aren't any fixed antenna
structures. All operation is for the present field-day-type operation.
RSGB has published the new IOTA directory 2000 and a new reference number was issued for the area at the city of Pori on the west coast of Finland.

Sandstrom Reef is located on this area and it is qualified for IOTA as EU-173 by G3KMA 17th July, 2000.
