Never Sufficient For Me

I wanted to show her the world
But the world that she wanted to see
Was the house in the suburbs, two kids and three cars,
The cruise to Aruba, a dozen charge cards
While all I desired was to fly to the stars --
It was never sufficient for me.

I wanted to give her the chance
To fulfill every unspoken dream.
But her dream of adventure was rather mundane.
What she sought was not pleasure, just absence of pain
And fulfilling her dream nearly drove me insane --
It was never sufficient for me.

I wanted to share with her love
Which transcended our moment in time.
Yet the love which she wanted was not of the soul
Rather just of the flesh. But such passion grows old
And with her, I knew, I could never be whole --
It was never sufficient for me.

I wanted to tell her goodbye
And begin my adventure anew.
But the moment we parted she entered my mind.
Her shadow intrudes on each new love I find.
How could I have guessed she would be so unkind?
It was never sufficient for me.
