Ham Radio Information

What is Ham Radio?
Ham or "Amateur" Radio is a radio communication service that is used by normal, everyday, average people. It's primary use is for casual, non-work related communications. It's secondary use (but most important purpose, in my opinion) is to provide emergency/back-up communication in times of disaster, or for public service events such as marathons, races, or parades.

In times of natural disasters such as fire, flood, earthquake, etc., Hams have been available to provide emergency communications for the Police, Fire and other emergency service departments. In Homestead Florida after the hurricane when all the police, fire and emergency service radio antennas and towers had either been blown down or lost electric power to their transmitters, and when all the cellular telephone sites were not operational, the only means of communicating with the outside world was through the help of Ham Radio Operators from over 20 miles away. The Hams from all over that part of Florida pitched in and helped the Police, Fire, National Guard, and all other Emergency Services such as the Red Cross do their jobs and help the victims.

Ham Radio is a fun, family oriented hobby that promotes the art of communication with others. In it's many forms, such as voice, Morse code (or CW), or even data, it can be a gateway to a new group of friends, from either down the road or on the other side of the world.

Current Projects

I am one of the Net-Control Operators for the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club's Computer Net. The Computer Net is a weekly (personal obligations permitting) Amateur Radio Net (organized discussion between Amateurs on a specific frequency at a specific time) where the Hams from the New York City Metropolitan area get together to discuss computer related topics. We talk about things like viruses, packet radio (Digital data transmission over Ham Radio), new software and hardware for computers, etc. If you're in the New York area and are a radio amateur or have a scanner, tune us in at 9:00 PM Friday evenings on
147.375 MHz, using a PL of 136.5 Hz.
