(or everything you might have been curiously interested in about Ham Radio)
What is Ham Radio?
Ham or "Amateur" Radio is a radio communication
service that is used by normal, everyday, average people. It's
primary use is for casual, non-work related communications. It's
secondary use (but most important purpose, in my opinion) is to
provide emergency/back-up communication in times of disaster, or
for public service events such as marathons, races, or parades.
In times of natural disasters such as fire, flood, earthquake, etc., Hams have been available to provide emergency communications for the Police, Fire and other emergency service departments. In Homestead Florida after the hurricane when all the police, fire and emergency service radio antennas and towers had either been blown down or lost electric power to their transmitters, and when all the cellular telephone sites were not operational, the only means of communicating with the outside world was through the help of Ham Radio Operators from over 20 miles away. The Hams from all over that part of Florida pitched in and helped the Police, Fire, National Guard, and all other Emergency Services such as the Red Cross do their jobs and help the victims.
Ham Radio is a fun, family oriented hobby that promotes the art of communication with others. In it's many forms, such as voice, Morse code (or CW), or even data, it can be a gateway to a new group of friends, from either down the road or on the other side of the world.
