What is teenangels?
Teenangels is a group of 13-18 year old volunteers that have been specially trained by the 'FBI', Police and many other leading safety experts in all aspects of online safety, privacy and security. After training for six sessions, the Teenangels run unique programs in schools to spread the word about responsible and safe surfing to other teens and younger kids, parents and teachers. At the urging of our Teenangel volunteers, a special group of volunteers will be able to continue as Teenangels after they become 18 years old and a new group of 'Tweenangels' has been formed for those between 11 & 13 years of age.
Brief history of Teenangels
Teenangels was founded in 1999 by leading cyberlawyer Parry Aftab, Executive Director of Wired Safety.org (the world's largest online safety and help organisation and 501c-3 (corporation)). Parry personally trains most Teenangels. However once our training videos (on which Parry and other safety experts will appear) are complete, we will be able to train teens even in places Parry can't get to.
More Information
The Teenangels work to ensure safe and private access to the Internet for all. Just as importantly, we want to empower other teens to do the same. We believe that since teens are the ones using the Internet the most, they also are the EXPERTS. It is our responsibility to keep ourselves and the less cyber-savvy kids and adults safe.
Our education programs go beyond schools. We started by writing safety tip lists for Parry's book on Internet Safety (The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace). Proceeds from sales of the book go directly towards funding for many Wiredsafety/Teenangels projects {More Information}
Since then we have briefed members of Congress, testified before the National Research Council, hosted safety summits at the Senate Building in Washington, DC, and shared our expertise with print and television media. We serve as a strong and accurate voice for young people that law enforcement, politicians, and policymakers listen to and respect.
While some of the original group has gone on to college, and new Teenangels have been trained. Groups have been formed in Wisconsin, New York, & New Jersey. We are forming in Virginia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Australia, and California. If you are interested in setting up your own group of Teenangels in your community, let us know.
