I was a regional net controller yesterday. I logged on to the IRLP chat room to see when they'll be taking check-ins for the international net and they called me on the radio to call for some more. What do you know.. Me sick and all... Got up to the mic, knowing my audio is rough, gives a little info on the weather here in Florida and gives a short call for any locals to check in... Sure enough N4PK and KG4MXE call so I pass the info by. For an international net, it sure was slow and some hams just seemed like they didn't want to be there.. It's funny how some nets are just plainly more fun than others...

Web controlled shortwave radio thingymajig is really neat! You should give it a try if you never heard HF before. You don't need a license there either.

A much better site is W6DXX's site giving full access to his remote base station. What a neat thing to listen too. It's located in Boston, but I think I need a HF ticket to use it. I'll just listen to the feed.. It's just as much fun. Well... I can't afford the $20 member fee a year really....

Last couple of days have been real mellow.. Made some contacts using ilink. A few again through the usual IRLP node. Tommorrow I think I'll participate in the international net through the IRLP. Should start around 11:00 am my time.

Over heard my local repeater owner may possibly be adding the ilink to his big and bad system sometime in the very near future. That'll be cool. I wrote my dad and let him know that he can make a call over here. He's not very active anymore, but it'd be sure neat if I heard him call. Shoot... It would be neat if I heard anybody from my family call. he he he..

Merry X-MAS!!!

Had an embarrassing experience today on the radio. The St .Pete Ham Radio Club was having a Christmas Net and I thought I'd jump in there and say Merry Christmas. Well, the frequency of the club repeater is on 147.060. The tricky thing is that my lack of experience has caused me to flip switches under my radio to choose the correct pl tone. Little did I know that this repeater is an open repeater which meant that pl tone were not required to use the system.. ha ha!! That's not the best part. ..

I figured I'd be sly and blast my signal on the simplex frequency of the repeater. Luckily, someone heard me. I found out later that I was using the wrong offset. I was using the neg side because that's what all the other 2mtr repeaters use. This one had a positive offset!! No WONDER!!!!

Like many things, ham radio is a hobby in which I barely have a feel for. I do have the rights to transmit and recieve but those I speak to almost certainly have more experience and knowledge than I. Most hams are extrememly nice and informative. I just don't want to do something that'll make me feel stupid later.

Today I had the opportunity to speak with a station in Germany, NJ, Tampa and Wisconsin using a technology already very common to the nature of the internet. Unlike most internet connectivity software, my contact may or may not be sitting next to a computer. Those stations sitting next to a computer like myself are practicing voice chat. Just like that of yahoo's. The other stations are out and about utilizing a normal radio to converse with me. These stations are transmitting directly into a repeater which is tied into the internet using what's called "voice of IP technology.. There are two sites that I have visited that utilize this kind of technology.
The first one allows me to make contact using my radio. It's called the IRLP (internet radio linking project). The second is called ILINK which I assume means Internet link.. Which separates these two sites is that one allows me to find a repeater that I can transmit to via radio, and the other allows me to make contacts using my computer. Both are a lot of fun. And VERY cheap to do!
