* Amsat Oscar-10 has been reported to have an FMing signal. Please do not use the satellite if the beacon frequency wavers, or if downlink signals chirp, warble, or drift irregularly. Such FMing occurs when sunlight strikes the satellite's solar cells at an unfavorable angle, resulting in insufficient power to the electronics. AO-10's batteries are dead, so the satellite shuts down during periods of eclipse.
*CC = continuous, unmodulated carrier.

* Radio Sport-10's beacon, ROBOT and transponder remain silent.
Bad news to report regarding the satellite:Leonid Labutin, UA3CR, responded,
"Yesterday I had meeting with Alex Papkov at GCC. We talked about RS-10 and other problems. He thinks there is 1 - 2% of the possibility to restore RS-10. It will be clear after coming back one good expert in GCC from his vacation. Cross fingers....."

Still no firm information as to what is wrong with the bird and why the problem occured. Let's pray that this report was a 'bad translation' from Russian to English.

* Radio Sport-15 has battery charging problems therefore the transponder and beacon are silent when the satellite is in darkness. CW is the most effective mode for using this satellite. Where six months back RS-15 was self-switching all it's systems off soon after entering eclipse, then two months ago continuing to function well into shadow, RS-15's transponder and beacon is now switching off even when under solar cell battery charge in daylight. This effect is evidenced whenever high power uplink stations come up on the transponder. The satellite normally recovers within a few seconds, only to switch off again when the QRO operator(s) re-appear. The lesson to be learned is for users to improve their downlink reception, and NOT to increase their uplink power in order to hear (just) themselves. 100w erp is more than enough to produce an adequate signal from RS-15 on the single provison that other users do not run more than this.

* Radio Sport-16 currently has its Mode A transponder turned off.
Andy Mirinov RK3KPK, reports that RS-16 "now has a new voice on CW". All beacon reports received by Andy of this latest Russian satellite will be answered by him with a QSL card.

* Please note Amsat Oscar-27 has a very sensitive receiver, I have routinely uplinked to it with a handheld on low power. On the other hand reception of the 70cm downlink signal is more difficult without a directional antenna most of the time. Therefore it is important to make sure that you can hear the satellite downlink before you transmit therefor avoiding interfering with others already on this one channel satellite repeater.

Recently a station has been heard sending Packet on this satellite. This is frowned upon and not one of the recommended uses of this satellite.

AO-27 TEPR (Timed Eclipse Power Regulation) States are as follows As of July 6, 1997
TEPR STATE Time TX Status
1 n/a OFF
2 n/a OFF
3 --- OFF
4 21 OFF
5 17 ON at Med Power
6 --- OFF

The TEPR States are defined as follows:
Tepr 1, Started when the satellite Enters the Eclipse
Tepr 2, Started at (tepr 1 time) after the satellite enters the eclipse
Tepr 3, Started at (tepr 1 time) + (tepr 2 time) ...
Tepr 4, Started when the satellite enters the Sun
Tepr 5, Started at (tepr 4 time) after the satellite enters the Sun
Tepr 6, Started at (tepr 4) + (tepr 5) ...

You should note that TEPR states 1,2 and 3 happen during the Night Time passes and TEPR states 4,5 and 6 happen during the Day time passes. These occur during EVERY pass, not just over the U.S.A.

The times assigned to the TEPR states are chosen for the health of the satellite over operation convenience. Therefore, during parts of the year the satellite will turn on late or turn off early as seen by ground stations.

*Fuji-Oscar 20 can also be used in mode JD (D meaning Digital), at time of writing this satellite was reported to be in Analog mode until further notice.

* Fuji-Oscar 29 can also be used in mode JD (D meaning Digital),the following schedule is a guide to satellite Mode availability. This schedule has been known to be amended with little or no notice by the ground control station.

Aug 22 (Fri) 08:26z JD1200
Aug 29 (Fri) 00:40z JD9600
Sept 5 (Fri) 01:18z JA
Sept 12 (Fri) 00:13z JD1200
Sept 19 (Fri) 00:51z JD9600
Sept 26 (Fri) 08:09z JA

* Mir Simplex - Astronaut Mike Foale has been making the odd contact with radio amateurs on 2M. Both 145.800 down 0.600 split and the 145.985 simplex have been used. Please do not interrupt QSO's already in progress.

* Mir SAFEX Repeater - Not operational at this time.
