OUR NEW AND IMPROVED HAM 101 SECTION
Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "Hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training.
Amateur radio operators enjoy personal (and often worldwide) wireless communications with each other and are able to support their communities with emergency and disaster communications if necessary, while increasing their personal knowledge of electronics and radio theory. An estimated six million people throughout the world are regularly involved with amateur radio.
The term "amateur" reflects the principle that amateur radio and its skilled operators are committed to helping communities without financial compensation; whereas commercial radio operates for profit.
The brotherhood of hams is one unlike any other.
We are considered some of the friendliest people on earth. Always lending a hand any way we can.
Our primary goal is to foster international goodwill and friendships that trend send time.
We often hold various contests to see who can contact the most people in a certain time, emergency drills, get togethers and more.
We are not a dead form of communication, as many people think. With today’s technology of computers, cell phones, DTV and the like. We as ham operators are still going strong as the leaders in communications. When the power is out, the phone lines are jammed, and chaos is every where. Ham operators are still able to communicate, and get help, with the simple push of a button.
Come to think of it, if it wasn’t for Ham Radio some of the things you use today would not exist. Cellular phone tracking and triangulation, we were doing that way before cellphones, we created the technology and still use it today, in various fun contests; as an example.
