Fellow WV Amateurs,

Hello, my name is Mac McMillian, W8XF the Section Emergency Coordinator for West Virginia. I am looking forward to working with our new Section Manager, Hal Turley, KC8FS, for the coming year. Hal has inspired me to recommit to my previous goals of January 1999.

I plan to coordinate the ARES activities in WV at a much higher level than in previous years, beginning with the October 2001 SET. All District Emergency Coordinators are hereby asked to look closely at your District and make every effort to get active people in EC roles as soon as possible. Some DEC/EC changes have been made recently, and some more are coming. ARRL membership is required for all appointments, and we are going to have to enforce that rule.

Hal asked me to present him with a set of commitments for the next 12 months. The following is a synopsis:

  1. Publish the WV EC/DEC list in an accurate and easily readable format, updated regularly.

  2. Attend a majority of WV HF Fone nets and 3/4 of the WVARES nets.

  3. Work with the WV legislature to achieve necessary legislation for a statewide ARES/RACES ID Card, and require SEC/STM/SM approved training to be eligible for it.

  4. Work with WV DEC’s to have 100% county EC assignments and/or redistrict WV to allow for multiple counties to be covered by EC’s.

  5. Promote ARES training in each and every county in WV. Trained ARES volunteers are far more valuable than untrained.

I hope to travel with the other WV ARRL representatives to Hamfests and club meetings across our state in the coming months and meet as many WV Hams as possible.

I am receptive to suggestions from all levels, and would appreciate any comments or ideas.

73,

Mac
