Chapter 5
Hisss Kshop
by Bob Libbin, K8QW

Hisss kshop. Hiss kshop.

Angie listened carefully to the short stacatto bursts of noise breaking her squelch noting a definate rythm to the spacing and length of transmissions.

Angie, who had recently upgraded her license to general, did not have a lot of opportunity to polish her newly acqured skills due to her full work load at school. Nonetheless, she instantly recognized the short bursts of noise as the International Morse Code.

When she learned the code, it was in the sterile environment of a classroom with a code practice oscillator and audio amplifier keyed very precisely by her ham radio instructor, Elmer Fistpounder.

Learning and demonstrating her knowledge of Morse Code in a classroom situation was, to put it mildly, tense. But this situation - copying the code without the benefit of an audio tone and deeply buried in QRN - was going to test her skills to the fullest.

Failure to copy the message was not an option. This was possibly a life-or-death situation. Angie, noted for her tenacity under pressure, cleared her mind of mind of all external influences and began to concentrate exclusively on the message.

Choices:

  1. Angie copies part of the message.
  2. The message grows so weak, she can't copy it.
  3. Angie copies the message...and it is not English!
