This photo of K9FHP was taken in December of 1962, soon after receiving the first OO report. The 15 year old operator is apparently elated that someone has finally answered his CQ, and is obviously enjoying the results of generating "a rough tone".
From left to right, the station consisted of a Hallicrafters S-38E receiver, a surplus BC-459 "COMMAND SET" the 1626 oscillator section only being used as a VFO, driving a Johnson Viking Adventurer transmitter(6AG7/807), driving a Globe LA-1, 300 watt linear amplifier (four EL-34's).
The S-38E receiver used a 12BE6 mixer/oscillator, 12BA6 i.f. amplifier, 12AT6 detector/first a.f. stage, 50C5 output amplifier, and a 35W4 rectifier. A majority of the broadcast radios manufactured in the USA during the late 1950's to early 1960's used the same tube lineup. This tube linup became known as the "All American Five".
On top of the receiver is a homebrew RF activated sidetone oscillator. A chrome Vibroplex "Original" bug can be seen along with a straight key mounted on a wooden board for stability.
