In those days, tube type equipment required heavy power supplys. All equipment had to be backpacked up the mountain to get ready for the contest. My Uncle Jim, W1FZ helped with this as well as the setup. He had won 2 VHF contests nationwide from this location | ||

Began nearly a 20 year overseas assignment with RCA working at an electronic technician at Eleuthera AAFB, a tracking station of the Air Force Eastern Test Range. My first experience at being DX, using 100 watts to a long wire at the receiver site. | ||

Set up my station in the building behind the motorcycle, which had been converted to barracks from it's WW II use as a hospital for casualties from the African theater. Made the first 160 meter QSO between VP2L and W with W2QHH in 1958. |
VP5FPGrand Turk Island Turks & Caicos 1959-1960

Spent two periods on Grand Turk the first time with RCA at the Air Force Tracking Station, the second when managed the Kittina Hotel. Made the first VP5 - W QSO on 6 Meters with K4UKG in August 1959. | ||
VQ8BQPort Louis Mauritius Indian Ocean 1961-1962 |
Operated VQ8BQ between missions of the USAF Coastal Sentry, the Indian Ocean Ship of Project Mercury, which was home ported in Port Louis. . Highlight of that assignment was tracking the John Glenn Mission from a point midway between India and Australia. |
