Over the next few days I’m going to be sending materials that will help you with a year end PR campaign in promoting amateur radio through the recognition of the 100th anniversary special event stations being held Dec. 29-30th around the world. If your local club hasn’t thought about it yet, encourage them to set up a 100th anniversary special event station in a public place, then promote media coverage. Here in Wilmington we plan to have a station during the day either on the grounds adjacent to the Battleship North Carolina, or in Riverfront Park next to the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington. Your ARRL Section officials want to get antenna consistency and relief legislation introduced in the 2007 session of the NC General Assembly, so the more the public sees ham radio in action, the better the chances for favorable passage. The 4 page “Hello” brochure is a great piece to hand out with your media releases, and to hand out to the public who stop by a special event station. If you need brochures, I still have some. Please e-mail me at [email protected] and tell me how many you’d like. Remember – the week between Christmas and New Year is a S-L-O-W time in the news business. TV and radio talk shows will be eager for live guests, but you still need to approach producers and book your appearance soon. For more information on the special event stations coming up, go to www.hello-radio.org/event My next e-mail to you in the next day or so will contain a 3 meg .mp3 file of a copy of my radio interview this past Monday about the centennial of the first human voice broadcast. The purpose of the file is to give you a flavor of what you can say in an 11 minute radio interview. I’ll also be sending along a list of “sample” questions your radio or TV host can use to help shape the interview. The best of the Season to you all. 73, Bill N2COP |

In an attempt to promote communication between other area 11 ARES RACES groups I have asked our members to check into your nets. We currently hold The Alexander County ARES RACES Training and information net on Sundays at 9:00 P.M. on the W4ERT 147.195+ (T-94.8) Located in Taylorsville, NC. Please feel free to check in. We also welcome Echolink check ins for the net at node 56135. Along with promoting communications within the region for our group, I am also asking our members to make visits during your meetings. I would like to invite you and your group members to our meetings that are held each 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7:00 pm at the Alexander County Rescue Squad building in Taylorsville, NC. Hopefully by late January the liaison program here will be up and running and we should be participating in your nets and visiting. If I could possibly give me conformations on your meeting times and nets if it is different than what is posted on line, it would be appreciated. The
Union County ARES Simplex Net proved to be very interesting and
very well attended! As you will recall, the event was a test to see
how well we would be able to communicate if repeaters in Union
County were not functioning.
Marty (AD4KO) in Indian Trail served as Net Control for the central
part of the county using the output frequency of the NC4UC repeater
(NC4UC) 145.390 in Monroe. The stations participating in this net
were: Mike WQ4K in Monroe, Vince KF4LVC mobile from Carowinds, Fred
KF4GZK in Charlotte, Micah W4MLE in Unionville, Rob KJ3C in Waxhaw,
Bill W4WNT in Weddington, Barry K4QW in Stallings, David KI4PWO from
Peachland, Bill K4VET from Richfield (WOW!), Ron WB4OOA in Waxhaw,
and Bob K4RLD in Monroe. In addition, Steve WA3RTC in Monroe, and
Joey KI4KGC from Wingate attempted to check in with handhelds with
low power.
Ron (WB4OOA) acted as the Net Control Station for those people who
used the output frequency of the K4WBT repeater (146.865) in
Waxhaw. Participating stations for that net were: Hal W7UWQ in
Waxhaw, Norman KO4CB from Waxhaw, Jim W3JC in Waxhaw, Bill KB4NET
from Waxhaw, Rob KJ3C in Waxhaw, Larry KR4PG in Waxhaw, Chet K1WTQ
in Jackson Township, Moe WA4MOE in Waxhaw, Stephen KI4QDB from
Waxhaw, David KI4PWO in Peachland, and Bill W4WNT in Weddington.
It should be noted that Ron WB4OOA, Bill W4WNT, Rob KJ3C, and David
KI4PWO were able to check into both nets. Also, Ron and Marty’s
signals were such that we did not pick up additional stations after
the initial round of checkins.
Thanks to everyone who took part. This was a great start and I’m
sure we will do more with simplex in the future. 73
