X-Windows
X-Windows is a lower level capability installed on many Linux systems. It runs from a command-line interface, and brings up an interactive GUI environment. In particular, the computer becomes an "X Server" because it serves the data from a keyboard, mouse, and display device. Notice this terminology is a little confusing since normally the computer a person sits at is a "client" consuming resources of a file or print server. The computer you're sitting at can be a client or a server.
This page needs to be expanded to include:
- ?relationship to Windows Manager, e.g. Ice, FluxBox.
- ?relationship to a Display Manager, e.g. XDM or KDM.
- ?relationship to a Desktop, e.g. Gnome or KDE.
