Marathonissi island

Zakynthos is  one of the most beautiful and fertile island of hte mediterranean and is the third largest Ionian island after Kefallonia and Corfù. Together with the isles of Strofades they comprise the Country of Zakynthos, wich spans over an area of 406 square kilometres and has a population of 35.000 inhabitants. The Zakynthians are optimistic, friendly, smiling and hospitable people. They are also said to be very talkative ans their linguistic idiom sounds like a song. Most of the island's landscape is mountainous, the tallest of wich is Mt. Vrachionas (758 m) in its western part, and Mt. Skopos (492 m), wich streches all the way to cape Gèrakas, on the south-eastern part of the island. The geological changes caused by the earthquakes are resonsible for the island's diversified coastal landscape, wich features smooth sandy beaches along its north-eastern part and vertical, steep, and often rocky shores on its south-western side.

The island's western coastline, between the capes of Schinari and Marathias features a number of captivating caves, the most famous of these being the so called Blu Cave.

The island's prevailing green colour insipired the Venetian who called it the "flower of the Est", or "Fior di levante".
