The British Isles Coast Radio Station Event
11th & 12th April 1999

The early days of Marconi's experiments from the Isle of Wight were based on communications from a shore station to ships. The developement of radio communications continued to be closely linked to establishing communications between the shore and ships at sea.

Marconi established the world's first coast radio station on the Isle of Wight, followed by his station at Lizard and other stations around the coastline of the British Isles. So, the Coast Radio Stations services of the United Kingdom and Ireland can trace their origins directly back to Marconi.

From this service has stemmed all the radio communications services we are so familiar with today, not to mention technology which is hidden behind the public telephone system. Whether it's Amateur Radio, Cellphone systems, satellite communications, or whatever - they are all offspring of the British Isles Coast Stations.

To recognise the tremendous historical importance of this service, and to acknowledge its passing, this part of the event aims to bring on air Amateur Radio stations from locations of UK and Irish Coast Radio Stations past and present.

While it is hoped that CW will be used extensivly, this will probably be more of a mixed SSB and CW event in 80 and 40m bands,
