New: A relatively recent Windows 10 update has resulted in my last PIC programmer ceasing to function due to problems with the Prolific chip driver software. Apparently the FTDI chip driver is not affected. As a result I have purchased a Velleman PIC programmer which uses the serial port on my desktop PC and is compatible with Windows 10. This programmer works correctly although I had to use the “slow down” function in the accompanying software to be compatible with my PC speed (3.8GHz).

There is a reasonably priced programmer, part number  PG164150, available from Microchip and their international distributors which will run from a USB port and program/debug a very wide range of micro-controllers.
