"Watts New" for 2006

This news brief is meant to keep you abreast of what has been going on within the California Amateur Radio Linking Association.

The following is an update of current system issues.

CARLA Special QST... CARLA adds more repeaters for 2006!! Click here for the full story.

CARLA 5. We have recently completed a complete renovation of the CARLA 5 Repeater. It now has local PL function as well as Link PL, it has battery backup in case of site power failure, and it has a few other new additions. For more details, go to the coverage page and click on "coverage map" under CARLA 5.

CARLA 6. In the summer of 2003 a couple of the solar panels were damaged from ice falling off the tower. You may have noticed the system taking itself off-line occasionally during the winter months as it went into battery self-preservation mode. In the spring of 2004 a wind turbine was added to increase charge capacity. In the summer of 2004 the damaged panels were replaced. Alas, the snowfall that we had between Christmas and New Years packed onto the panels and caused the machine to go off-line due to the batteries not being able to get a good charge from the panels. In mid-January the CARLA 6 repeater came back on-line after a day of sunshine melted the snowpack. Keep in mind that during the winter months 6 may go off-line ocassionally for a day or two to recharge.

CARLA 8. In mid July of 2006, we swapped out the hardware at 8 with a temporary machine and brought the original back to the Carla Labs for maintenance and general clean-up. In October we completed the new repeater and installed it at 8. It has local PL function as well as Link PL, it has battery backup in case of site power failure, and it has a new link radio which links to our hub for a much improved link path signal to the rest of the Carla system.

CARLA 10. This machine is located in the Oakland hills at several hundred feet elevation. It has been on the air for over 3 years and plans are to find a home in the South Bay area for this system and link it in with the rest. More on this as it develops.

CARLA 11. This machine is located in the Walnut Creek area at several hundred feet elevation. It is currently linked into the Carla system and plans are to install a local PL and battery backup. Check the coverage page. More on this soon.

CARLA 12, 13, 14, 15. CARLA adds more repeaters for 2006!! Click here for the full story.

CARLA 3, 7 CARLA adds 2 more repeaters in November! Click here for the full story.

CARLA <--> GRS. Carla is now connected to the GRS Repeater on Mt. Vaca. This repeater has great coverage in the Sacramento Valley area. The frequency of this repeater is 440.750+ with a PL of 100.0 so try it the next time you're in the valley.

Check out the CARLA newsgroup on Yahoo's Club section. There you can post/read messages, post pictures, chat and other related stuff. Some of the sections of the club page require you to be a Yahoo member. We hope you visit us there and enjoy it's added benefits.

Until next time
