September 2013
Amateur Radio Society of Dryden
September 11, 2013 Meeting Minutes
Dryden Fire Service Training Centre
President
Bryan, VA3BRY, brought the meeting to order.
M.S.—Scott,
VA3EXT; Bob, VA3GUN—the Financial Statement as at September 11, 2013 be adopted
as presented. Carried.
Scott,
VA3EXT, reported on the New Prospect School Lockdown Exercise on May 10th.
Assisting with the exercise:
Bob, VA3GUN; Scott, VA3EXT; Del, VE3DEL; Arnie, VA3NOL; Ken, VE3VGM; Will Moody,
SWL; Dave, VE3LMU. We demonstrated
how Ham Radio could help in emergencies by QSO-ing with Kenora’s school who were
participating in a similar exercise.
VE3HWN, Tom, was manning the demonstration there.
We used the VHF/UHF radio link, IRLP, as well as HF.
In addition, we ran a Skype video link which allowed the students to see
each other as several students shared the microphone and talked to each other.
The highlight of the evening was an IRLP link with an Australian ham.
Several students in both Kenora and Dryden QSO-ed with him.
The only problem we encountered was the security protocols of the Kenora-Patricia
District School Board computer network did not allow us to demonstrate the use
of ARPS. Scott and Del were able to
make a work-around.
Scott was
able to go to Ignace Monday, and reinstalled the VA3IGN IRLP node and radio.
Adi still hasn’t co-ordinated with Scott to get the Sioux Lookout VE3YXL
repeater back up…range has deteriorated.
Milner Ridge, VE4MIL link is back on line, so we can work thru to
Winnipeg on the Pine Tree InterTie.
Kenora’s VE3LWR repeater is noisy, however, they haven’t been able to
isolate the problem.
M.S.—Bryan,
VA3BRY; Ron, VA3RHP—the club reimburse Scott $50.00 for travel expenses to
Ignace. Carried.
Bob, VE3YDN,
and Bryan, VA3BRY, reported on the TransCanada Pipeline Simulated Emergency
Exercise scheduled for the morning of May 25.
Volunteers were assigned positions at various locations.
We will meet at 0900 at the Fire Hall, VA3EOC Command Centre.
We will use the VA3DIS repeater.
The next
event will be Pumpkin Patrol on Gate Night and Halloween nights, Oct 30 and 31st.
