Pero's death touches me deeply, both as a fellow ham and a former UNHCR telecoms technician. Although I only knew of him, many of my UNHCR colleagues from Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo considered him a good friend. His death naturally brings to mind just how vulnerable we really are under any circumstances. Nevertheless, we must consider that he died doing what he loved most of all: trying to make the world a better place through application of his talents in radio electronics. Public service was his profession and passion. I applaud him for taking risks to serve, and I deplore those who raised arms against this selfless young man.

It is with great sadness that I learned the loss of our Friend Pero. Dear Pero, During my two years in Mostar, not a single day passed without be greeted by the most generous smile, sign of your unconditional love for life and a warm "hello my friend". Willie and you were the centre of our daily activity. Every morning and every evening you were there to check on all of us, ensuring that every thing was fine. You slept near your beloved radio and computers just in case. Your presence beside us during rough time was always a great moral support. Through your always efficient radio network you facilitated our work in assisting people in needs. Your generosity and willingness to assist other will be remembered forever in B&H, Albania and West Timor. You desire to work in places where humanitarian assistance was required brought to West Timor. You were so happy to be able to help others. You paid a high price for your dedication. I had the opportunity of first meeting Pero in Sarajevo back in September 1997, and was delighted when our paths crossed again in West Timor in June 2000. The combined Staff Members of all agencies in West Timor, UN and NGO's, including staff from their offices in Jakarta gathered in Bali this evening for a Memorial Service in honour of : PERO SIMUNDZA, SAMSON AREGAHEGN, and CARLOS CACERES . The homilies from friends and staff members, both international and national, paid tribute to their bravery, their dedication, and their unselfish approach to their work. In a highly emotional atmosphere, condolences and sympathies were conveyed to their families, loved ones, and friends for this tragic loss. Atambua staff members had not yet arrived from Dili but their thoughts and wishes are included. Dear Pero, I knew you when I was working in West Timor too. We met many times,when I visited your office or in Harmony, had a dinner. I remember the last time I saw you in your office (before I went back to Jakarta), we talked about your new motorcycle... From the bottom of my hearts, I salute you. I know you are a good person, who wants to take a risk to go to Atambua and help East Timorese Refugees there. I join the entire civilized world in mourning the senseless loss of our friend Pero, and his colleagues. Pero's heart compelled him to dangerous places to make a difference. He has indeed made a difference and has, unfortunately, become a martyr for the cause of peace in our turbulent world. I hope this tragedy will finally bring some action to stop the insanity that has plagued the Timorese island. If we can all see peace on the island and other disturbed regions, maybe Pero and others like him have not died in vain. God bless you Pero. This world will miss you!
