In 1981, year of the disabled, late Mr. John E Amaratunge 4S7JA and I started a Ham Radio Training Project for the visually handicapped at the School For The Blind at Ratmalana. There were ups and downs, but we have continued these classes twice a week and gradually passed the first five years.

One day, when we were returning from the School For The Blind at Ratmalana, on the way back home I told John 4S7JA, that we have already passed the fifth year of teaching and there is no sign of progress even at the horizon!. John 4S7JA right away smiled and recited the following Sanskrit verse by heart from the "Bhagavad-Gita" and gave the English translation.

Karmany evadhikaras te
Ma phalesu kadacana
Ma karma-phala-hetur bhur
Mate sanga stv akarmani.

"you have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty."

Further more he told me that, not receiving any good results should not be a cause to stop such a noble good deed. I felt very sorry for uttering such empty words and I promised him that I will continue my work until we achieve the goal and promised to be with him side by side all the time.

After continuing another five years we were managed to help totally blind Radio Amateur Om "Ovi" 4S7OV to obtain the Amateur Radio License. He became the first blind Radio Amateur to receive a general class license in 4S7 land. Now there are another four Hams in Sri-Lanka. They are 4S5BJ "BON", 4S5NA "NEIL", 4S6KV "VASANTHA", and 4S7AA "ASGAR". After Om John 4S7JA went silent key, Om Wije 4S7VJ joined with me to continue the project. Now this is the successful 19th year of the project and in the near future, another three blind radio amateurs will join the 4S7 crowd.

I am very happy to say that I will continue my service till end of my life, and in the future I want to extend my services to the deaf and dumb persons as well
