Father of 5 and grandfather to 4, I was born on a farm in the beautiful Teign Valley, which is where I lived for the first 25 years or so of my life. I have always been surrounded by animals of various kinds, including a number of dogs, the last of these being the late Bruce, a fluffy Border Collie who was everyone's best friend and therefore utterly useless as a guard dog, but great company.

Dog walking is not always a gentle pursuit as you may be aware, and so the walker needs to be reasonably fit. I worked as a milkman for around 10 years, so brisk walking for several hours is not a problem for me, and a job like that certainly teaches you how to deal with all aspects of our wonderful British weather!

I like getting out & about walking around our countryside and also enjoy the company of dogs; I have walked dogs many times over the years for friends, relatives and neighbours in a part-time capacity, but my most recent full-time employment pretty much restricted me to a workshop where I rarely saw natural sunlight. It gradually dawned on me that maybe I could combine my love of walking and dogs, and make dog-walking a full-time business. One dark, rainy evening in 2018, after much agonising and several pot noodles, I decided to take the plunge, consequently handed in my notice at work and Blackdown Dogs came into being.

I live just outside the village of Dunkeswell, up in the Blackdown Hills which is where the business name comes from. It's a beautiful area and there are many locations close to me which are suitable for dog walking with possibly the most popular being the many walks in and around Hembury Fort - well used by dog walkers both private and professional.

I have had a number of dogs over the years, but don't currently have one. I am, however, currently slave to Ollie the cat, and also look after 6 chickens (Gobby, Chicken Jane, Croppy, Stumpy, Dopey and No.2), Otto and Tilly the rabbits, and Nake the snake.

Hobbies and interests include geology, paleaontology, photography, astronomy, electronics and amateur radio, to name a few. I have a great liking for anything scientific, whether it be chemistry, biology or physics. I don't claim to be an expert in these subjects, but I am interested in them. I also enjoy messing around with 'old' electronics such as 1950s / 1960s radio equipment, although despite my electronics bias, I don't consider myself a gadget man - I do have a dislike for regurgitated or repackaged technology which has been done for the sake of marketing. Maybe ask to see my mobile phone if you need a laugh - it has become a bit of a joke amongst some of my clients, but it still works!
