Getting young people interested in ham radio and maintaining that interest remains a challenge. This section of the site aims to provide interesting web links, share information and stimulate ideas around supporting and encouraging our young radio amateurs.

 NEWS, UPDATES, EVENTS!

  • Our candidates for the Radio Amateurs Exam (RAE) have completed their practical HF operating assessment on the 16th of May. The exam (ham test) was written on the 20th of May. Results here
     
  • We have established a relationship between young hams in South Africa and the young hams from YACHT & K8DAR in the US. They have an Echolink node out of Sturgeon Bay, WI. Node #44407, the K9KJM repeater. A weekly youth net is held at 20:00 CAT (18:00 UTC) on Saturdays.
     
  • Mitchel ZS6YH (previously ZU6M - 11 years) and his sister Melinda ZU6MM (9) are the first young South African members of Y.A.C.H.T! Many thanks to Ed and the YACHT team for the warm welcome and ham spirit shown in inviting them to join. Our latest SA YACHT members are Byron ZS5DXT previously from New Germany, KZN (now in New Zealand!) and Dylan ZU6D from Pretoria. Welcome, guys!

    85 young people earned their badges. Corné ZU6C
    and Andries ZS6VL were the instructors.
    (The Voortrekkers - a youth organisation, similar to
    Scouts)
    Melinda ZU6MM proudly displays her WAZS100
    certificate - she has worked 100 stations across the
    six divisions in South Africa. At only 9 she is
    the youngest SA ham ever to receive this award.
    She is a friend of our club - a member of ZS6ERB.
