About our club

Some of our many interests and activities

  • Contests - We love contests, not only because of the competitive spirit in the ham community, but also for the opportunity to network and socialise!

  • Youth events - we often support youth groups like Scouts and Voortrekkers during events such as JOTA or CQ Hou Koers. Exposing young people to the magic of ham radio is very important if our hobby is to survive.

  • Managing our repeater network - We have an extensive VHF/UHF repeater system, covering a substantial part of Southern Gauteng as well as the Northern, Eastern and Western Free State.

Important upcoming events

  • HF Field day contest - One (OK, two!) of the highlights on our calendar. This two-part contest takes place during February and November. Where is our contest QTH? Doornkloof, the historic Voortrekker farm of Sarel Cilliers. Next event: 14 - 16 November 2008. Want to come along? See the About our club page for contact info.

  • ZS4SRK is planning the 2008 Blockhouse project. This will involve activating some historic Anglo Boer War blockhouses all around the country, providing some much needed exposure not only to our hobby, but to the blockhouses themselves and should highlight the need for this heritage to be protected.

Recent activities

  • Camping weekend at Meiringskloof - during the April 2008 long weekend, a small number of club members enjoyed a camping weekend at Meiringskloof, a beautiful campsite near the small Eastern Free State town of Fouriesburg.

  • We were fortunate to have the (now previous) South African Radio League president, Graham ZS6GJH, visit us on the 1st of March. He was accompanied by his YL Natasha. Graham spoke to us about the role of the SARL, what it does for us as a club / as hams and what we can do to support the league. Graham was pleasantly surprised to learn that almost all of our club members are also members of the SARL. In order for amateur radio to be protected and well represented in SA, it is important that radio amateurs should be SARL members. I am a member. Are you?
