This is a dumb question, but the ground and/or chassis connections
are being engaged upon insertion prior to any other connections?
I have worked on a problem where gnd connections weren't done
first upon insertion and that caused a lot of the circuitry to go
into an indeterminate state causing a large current draw.
Solution was simply extending the chassis/gnd pin.
Pretty sure you already know this, but had to ask.
