The simulation method used to demonstrate mode conversion incidental to vias
through stacks of ground planes, coupling energy when signal traces are
perpendicular to each other as well as split ground planes is accomplished
with 3D full wave TIME DOMAIN field solvers. Specifically, being able to
observe the "launched charge" propagate (& reflect & bounce) in the time
domain provides intuitive corroboration and can reveal additional phenomena.
Phenomena such as "where does that energy between the ... planes come
from?". Unfortunately there are only a few time domain field solvers
commercially available that allow capturing the time transient information.
