If the cross hatch lines are diagonal, return currents will
necessarily flow in a zig-zag fashion. Hence the E-M fields
will be more complex, and the energy (the "Poynting vector")
will also take a zig-zag path. Since there's no way around the
speed of light (Star Trek notwithstanding), the effective
velocity of propagation will be slower. I recall numbers
around 30% slower for a particular implementation a long time ago.
